Child Abuse- the long term effects.

I was watching a newscast on the Florida case involving the rape and murder of Jessica Lunsford. Her killer, John Cooey, is facing the death penalty after being found guilty of her murder. There seems to be some concern over the fact that the killer's history of being heinously abused as a child will be brought up in the interest of sparing him the death penalty. To me, this is just another glaring example of our societies' unwillingness to deal with the problems surrounding child abuse.

It would be far more effective to direct our resources to identifying and treating survivours of abuse rather than ignoring them until they are involved in some heinous act. We are then forced into directing resources to prosecutions, incarcerations, and treating the multiples of victims. The treatment of one could spare many others and reduce the tax burden on the public at large. Is that so difficult to comprehend? It certainly seems that way.

In no way am I trying to understate the horror of what happened to Jessica or that John Cooey should pay for his crime. But I can't help but think that a little girl would still be alive and Mr. Cooey would be a productive member of society if there had been some intervention here.

As a survivor of chld abuse, I have great insight into situations such as this. I just wish there were others willing to come forward and tell their stories as I have. My book, "Beating The Odds: An Autobiographical Rags To Racing Story" is an example of how reluctant and ill-equipped our society is in dealing with survivours of abuse. While I was able to pull it together in spite of little effective intervention and no psychiatric treatment, others such as Cooey were not able to do so.

My case is over 30 years old. Sad to say, the same problems I dealt with continue to occur. In 2004, an 11-year-old girl was found to have been beaten and neglected regularly by her parents. This had been known for a while by school faculty and Social Services, but no one did anything about it. Joella Reaves succumbed to the effects of the abuse. Someone has to take a stand and speak for little Joella Reaves. The only difference between her case and mine is that I survived.  And I am not afraid to speak out anymore.

    Can this pedophile be stopped?

Forty five year old, Jack McClellan, is a pedophile.  He has appeared on the O'Reilly Factor in a taped segment stating that he likes little girls, taking pictures of them in public places, and watching them.   McClellan states "All I can say is I've done nothing illegal since I've been here in California, the whole state, my conscience is clear and I'm going to keep on keepin on what I'm doing obeying the law."

Although McClellan has not been charged with any crimes involving children he is still a twisted individual who needs to be stopped.  He has made his actions  public through his website and speaking out.

A few parents have filed for an injunction against McClellan and today their attorneys will appear before a federal judge to see if it is granted.  Is that enough to stop this man?

ADMITTED PEDOPHILE WALKS FINE LEGAL LINE

This Washington Post article refers to California pedophile and his recent arrest in California.  This pedophile received a Superior Court Order from Judge Melvin Sanolvig which stated to stay away from children at least 30 feet away.  This pedophile is tip-toeing around the law according a former prosecuter.

Legal experts believe that this pedophile's FIRST AMENDMENT right to free expression may have been violated and will eventually be overturned.

Aug 24, 2007 another hearing is scheduled to discuss this Superior Order further.

    SELF PROCLAIMED PEDOPHILE GOES FREE

Jack McClellan tip toed around the law.....violated his restraining order but was released on August 21,2007 and prosecuters dropped charges because the California judge failed to set a hearing to argue McClellan's merits and failed to give the pedophile proper notice.  McClellan admits he suffers from depression and launched his web site as a form of "therapy".

    VERMONT....... NOT PROTECTING CHILDREN

Vermont's judicial system has clearly shown that it's LEGAL system doesn't believe in punishment for sexual predators, offenders who are stalking women or protecting children from sexual crimes.

VERMONT HAS HAD A RISE IN CRIMES......with these type of cases and this will continue.  The JUDICIAL system must be held accountable for this ......and make the necessary changes to help protect the citizens of VERMONT and it's children.

    POWER OF WORDS

"STICKS & STONES MAY BREAK MY BONES BUT NAMES WILL NEVER HURT ME!"

We all heard that saying when we were children, and, like so many other childlike chants, it was a great myth.  Words do have power, immense power, and they can cause much pain, because when they are repeated in negative fashion, people especially children, may end up believing them.  "You're a bad boy," "You'll never amount to anything."  "Your a looser," "Does your face hurt? It's killing me."  These are only slight examples of the negative language we often hear.  We have all heard them, and unfortunately have been guilty of dishing them out as well.

During the 1980's there was a big push for building self-esteem, and workshops were available everywhere teaching us how to make people "feel good about themselves."

"No one can ruin OUR DAY without OUR permission, and always feeling good about ourselves is impossible.
